Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) Therapy

The most effective therapy for OCD

If you struggle with obsessive thoughts, anxiety, or compulsive behaviors, you may feel trapped in cycles that are exhausting and difficult to break.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) therapy is the gold-standard treatment for OCD and is highly effective for reducing intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviors.

ERP helps people gradually face fears in a safe and structured way so that anxiety loses its power over time.

In my practice, I provide ERP therapy for adults experiencing OCD, intrusive thoughts, and anxiety-driven avoidance.

What Is Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)?

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a specialized form of cognitive behavioral therapy designed to treat Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

ERP works by helping individuals:

  • gradually face feared thoughts or situations (exposure)

  • resist the urge to perform compulsions or avoidance behaviors (response prevention)

Over time, the brain learns that the feared outcome is unlikely or manageable, and the anxiety begins to decrease.

ERP helps retrain the brain so that intrusive thoughts no longer control behavior.

Issues ERP Therapy Can Help With

ERP therapy is most commonly used to treat OCD, including:

  • Intrusive thoughts

  • Checking compulsions

  • Contamination fears

  • Harm OCD

  • Relationship OCD

  • Scrupulosity / religious OCD

  • Mental compulsions

  • Reassurance seeking

  • Avoidance behaviors

ERP can also help with certain anxiety-related fears and phobias.

How ERP Therapy Works

ERP therapy involves gradually approaching fears in a structured and supportive way.

This might include:

  • confronting situations that trigger anxiety

  • allowing intrusive thoughts to exist without trying to neutralize them

  • reducing reassurance seeking

  • resisting compulsive behaviors

While this process can initially feel uncomfortable, it helps the brain learn that anxiety naturally rises and falls without needing compulsions.

Over time, the cycle of obsession and compulsion weakens.

What to Expect in ERP Therapy

ERP therapy is collaborative and gradual.

We work together to create an exposure hierarchy, starting with situations that feel manageable and slowly progressing toward more difficult triggers.

Sessions may involve:

  • identifying obsessive thought patterns

  • learning how compulsions maintain anxiety

  • practicing exposures in a structured way

  • developing strategies to tolerate uncertainty and discomfort

ERP therapy focuses on building confidence in your ability to handle anxiety without compulsions.

My Approach to ERP Therapy

One of the most important parts of ERP therapy is helping clients understand that intrusive thoughts are not dangerous or meaningful.

Many people with OCD feel intense fear, guilt, or shame about their thoughts.

Through ERP, clients learn that thoughts are simply thoughts — and that they do not need to control behavior.

Over time, clients often experience a significant reduction in anxiety and regain freedom from OCD-driven patterns.
