EMDR Therapy

A powerful therapy for healing trauma and reducing emotional distress

Many people come to therapy feeling stuck in patterns that seem to repeat no matter how much insight they gain.

You may logically understand why you react the way you do, yet certain memories, emotions, or triggers still feel overwhelming.

EMDR therapy helps the brain process difficult experiences so they no longer carry the same emotional intensity.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy used around the world to help people heal from trauma, anxiety, and distressing life experiences.

In my practice in Alpharetta, Georgia and via telehealth, I use EMDR therapy with adults experiencing trauma, anxiety, OCD, relationship wounds, and painful memories that continue to affect their present lives.

What Is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.

It is a therapy that helps the brain reprocess distressing memories so they are no longer emotionally overwhelming.

When something painful or traumatic happens, the brain sometimes stores the experience in a way that keeps it “stuck.”

This can lead to:

  • intrusive memories

  • emotional triggers

  • anxiety

  • shame

  • negative beliefs about yourself

EMDR therapy helps the brain finish processing those experiences so they become part of your past rather than something that continues to disrupt your present.

Instead of feeling like the memory is happening again, it begins to feel like something that happened and is now over.

Issues EMDR Therapy Can Help With

EMDR therapy is most widely known for treating trauma, but it is effective for many issues, including:

  • Childhood trauma

  • Complex trauma

  • Anxiety and panic

  • PTSD

  • Negative self-beliefs

  • Relationship wounds

  • Emotional triggers

  • Disturbing memories

  • Grief and loss

  • OCD and intrusive thoughts

  • Medical trauma

  • Performance anxiety

Many clients come to EMDR after trying other forms of therapy and finding that certain experiences still feel emotionally unresolved.

How EMDR Therapy Works

EMDR therapy uses bilateral stimulation (often eye movements, tapping, or alternating sounds) while you briefly focus on aspects of a memory.

This process helps the brain reorganize and process the memory in a healthier way.

Over time, clients often notice:

  • the memory feels less intense

  • emotional triggers decrease

  • negative beliefs shift

  • the body feels calmer

  • the past feels more like the past

You are always in control during EMDR sessions.

We move at a pace that feels safe and manageable.

EMDR therapy is not about reliving trauma in detail — it is about helping your brain process what has already happened so it no longer holds the same emotional charge.

What to Expect in EMDR Therapy

EMDR therapy follows a structured process to ensure that treatment is safe and effective.

Early sessions focus on:

  • understanding your history

  • identifying the memories or experiences that are still affecting you

  • building emotional regulation and grounding skills

When you're ready, we begin reprocessing specific memories using EMDR techniques.

Many clients notice meaningful shifts in how they experience memories, emotions, and beliefs about themselves.

While EMDR can work more quickly than some traditional therapies, the pace is always guided by what feels right for you.

My Experience Using EMDR Therapy

One of the things that drew me to EMDR therapy was seeing how powerful it can be for people who have felt stuck for a long time. Over the years, I have witnessed clients experience rapid and meaningful shifts after processing memories that had been affecting them for years.Memories that once triggered shame, fear, or overwhelming emotion begin to feel more distant and manageable. Clients often describe feeling lighter, calmer, and more able to move forward in their lives.

EMDR doesn't erase the past, but it helps the brain process those experiences so they no longer carry the same weight.

For many people, this can be a deeply freeing experience.
